Faye Louise, a 40-year-old resident of Horsham, West Sussex, has made an incredible recovery following extensive surgery for a rare form of cancer.
In 2023, she was diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and underwent an 11-hour surgery that resulted in the removal of eight organs.
Louise has now returned to her role as a flight dispatcher at Gatwick Airport, where she is responsible for preparing aircraft for takeoff and landing.
Her medical journey began with complaints of pain and bloating, which led to a procedure to remove an ovarian cyst. During that surgery, doctors discovered a large tumor on her appendix, necessitating what she referred to as the "mother of all surgeries" in November 2023.
"I had to lose my spleen, gallbladder, and appendix,” Louise detailed. “I underwent a full hysterectomy, which meant losing my ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and womb. They also removed part of my liver and small intestine, reattached my colon, and cleaned my pelvis and diaphragm before administering heated chemotherapy directly into my abdomen.”
Now cancer-free, Louise reflects on her recovery, attributing her progress to her love for aviation.
“This time last year, I couldn’t even walk. So to be standing here now, back in an environment I cherish and doing the job I love, is something I never thought I would physically achieve again,” she shared. “I had no core strength, so I had to rebuild the muscles in my abdomen. It feels wonderful to be back in my own space.”
This experience has been particularly meaningful for Louise, who lost her mother to cancer. “I have the mindset of: ‘I’m not going to let this defeat me. It took my mum, but it won’t take me,’” she stated. “I believe that determination and a positive attitude are crucial for anyone facing similar challenges.”
L
ooking to the future, Louise will undergo annual scans for up to 20 years to monitor her health. She also offers advice to others, emphasizing the importance of being proactive about health concerns. “If you suspect something is wrong, don’t ignore it,” she advised.
