It’s World AMR Awareness Week, and there are things you need to know:
🦠 Antimicrobial resistance or AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to treatment.
💊 Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infections, such as antibiotics and antivirals.
🤒 The overuse and misuse of antimicrobials causes microbes to adapt and become resistant, making medicine ineffective against infections.
⚠️ AMR threatens our ability to treat common infections and to perform life-saving procedures.
AMR kills more people annually than any single infectious disease. Staying healthy is important to protect yourself from AMR. Here’s what you can do:
✅ Keep your hands clean
✅ Only take antibiotics when prescribed
✅ Never share antibiotics
✅ Stay up-to-date with your vaccines
AMR can affect anyone - turning minor injuries, routine surgeries, or common infections into life-threatening situations.
💪🏻 If we act now, we can still preserve the effectiveness of life-saving treatments
