The" Man died"Turning my life into something people can watch, pains me’: Wole Soyinka on having his memoir made into a movie.
One of the most renowned writers on the continent, Wole Soyinka was the first Black African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. However, he was imprisoned without charge or conviction twenty years prior for disclosing information about the civil conflict in his native Nigeria.
He used toilet paper, handmade ink, and butcher bones to scribble notes and poetry while he was held in isolation. These concepts evolved into the 1972 memoir "The Man Died," which serves as the basis for the film of the same name, which narrates the life of the novelist and dramatist during the height of the American Civil War.
At the age of 90, Soyinka discussed the effects of his incarceration with CNN's Larry Madowo from his residence in Abeokuta, Southwest Nigeria.
